The Waterberg Biosphere Reserve is a protected nature reserve of about 4000 km² in the district of the same name in northern Limpopo province, South Africa. It was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.
The region includes several items of archaeological interest. There are Stone Age cave paintings, the work of the first who settled in St. about 2000 years ago, finds the most recent Bantu cultures and important examples of ancient culture of the Ngoni people, who appeared in around the Waterberg 1300.
From a biological standpoint, in the Waterberg is protected numerous native plant and animal species, including the main population of wildebeest stripe of southern Africa.
In the Waterberg are an estimated 80,000 people. The farm, once the predominant economic activity in the area, has been phased out since the middle of the twentieth century in favor of a reassessment of the environmental heritage of the Waterberg, where ecotourism is now an important source of income.
The area is also rich in platinum.
