Koyasan description

The Koya-san is located in the Kii Peninsula, south of the city of Osaka, in Wakayama Prefecture. It is considered one of the holiest places in Japan and one of the largest monastic centers of the country.

Founded 12 centuries ago by the Monk Kūkai, it become the main center for the study and practice of Esoteric Buddhism and headquarters of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. There is now a large sacred area and a complex of temples and shrines.

The area of Oku-no-In is surrounded by a dense forest of cedars, and is home to a vast cemetery with lots of tombs, a monument to the fallen in World War II and the mausoleum of Kukai.
