Catania is a Italian town of 301,303 inhabitants, as registry office, the capital of the province of Sicily, which is the second largest city by population and population density city, and the most populated of the Italian cities that are not regional capital.
Catania is one of 15 metropolitan cities in Italian. The conurbation has a population of 603,436 inhabitants before the crown given certain peripheral municipalities, while the metropolitan area it totals 806,979.
Destroyed several times by volcanic eruptions (the most impressive in historical times, is that of 1669) and by earthquakes (the most catastrophic mentioned were those of 1169 and 1693).
Its historic center was declared a World Heritage Site, along with seven towns of the Val di Noto, in 2002.
