Algeciras description
Algeciras is a Spanish city of about 120,000 inhabitants in the province of Cadiz, in the autonomous community of Andalusia.
The city is the extreme south of the Iberian Peninsula, the Strait of Gibraltar in a small bay on a terrace of red sandstone deposited in the Quaternary period from Río de la Miel.
Its name comes from Arabic Al-Jazira al-Khadra, the “Island Green”, set in 711 by the first Arab conquerors landed on the peninsula.
The main economic resource of its territory is the port located in the bay.
The port of Algeciras is the main Spanish port for freight and passenger traffic.
