Auckland description

Auckland is a city in New Zealand, located on the North Island.

In its metropolitan area live more than 1,300,000 inhabitants, divided among various local authorities: the District of Auckland, North Shore and parts of Papakura District, Rodney, Franklin, Manukau and Waitakere.

Its Maori name is “Tamaki Makau Rau or” and the transliterated version, “Akarana“. The projections indicate that the demographic statistics of the city will be quicker than the rest of the nation for many years.

Auckland lies between the Hauraki Gulf to the east, the Manukau Harbour to the southwest and some hills to the southeast and west.

The central part of the urban area occupies a narrow isthmus that divides the ports of Manukau (Pacific Ocean). In its narrowest point of the isthmus is just 1,500 meters wide.

Auckland is one of the few cities in the world to have ports on two separate sea basins. The city was named after George Eden Auckland, First Lord of the Admiralty, and Governor General of India Company.

Today, Auckland is the most important port in the Country, due to its location on transpacific routes. The business has led to industrial production with a very diverse industries including chemical, mechanical, glass, textiles, paper mills, factories, assembly of motor vehicles.
