Rio de Janeiro description
Rio de Janeiro (meaning River of January in Portuguese) is a city in Brazil. The city is famous for its tourist beaches (Copacabana and Ipanema), onto which other hotels, for the giant statue of Jesus known as Christ the Redeemer ( “Cristo Redentor“) on Mount Corcovado, and for its annual carnival.
Rio de Janeiro also contains the largest forest inside an urban area.
The city occupies the western edge of the Baía de Guanabara and some of its islands, such as the Governador and Paquet, and develops on narrow flood plains sandwiched between the mountains and hills.
The city has a population of about 6,150,000 inhabitants, and occupies an area of 1256 kilometers ². Population including the metropolitan area is about 12 million. Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil after Sao Paulo and was the nation’s capital until 1960, when Brasília took its place.
In 2016, will host the Games of the XXXI Olympiad.
